Voice recordings coming soon.

G and Ğ look almost the same. Do they sound the same?

The g keeps the same sound in both.

Now look at ğ.

ğ

You won’t see ğ at the beginning of a Turkish word. It comes after a vowel.

dağ

soğuk

eğer

değil

eğlence

Listen to the words. What do you notice about ğ?

Listen again.

dağ — The vowel before ğ is lengthened.

soğuk — The vowels can blend together, often sounding almost like a long “o”.

eğer / değil — You may hear a y-like transition.

What you hear can vary with the word, speaker and speaking style.

You can't always tell exactly how a word with ğ will sound just by looking at it. Listen to the word first.
